Greek Communities and Climate Change

Updated: Mar 6, 2019

Delta Gamma House, Panhellenic Council Meeting

1st Update

At this point, we have engaged in active outreach to the Greek community, but have yet to find any interested students. We plan to present tonight at the bi-monthly Panhellenic Association at FSU and at Phi Sigma Pi, a service fraternity. While we continue to work this plan, we have also developed an alternative course of action at the request of the Director of Campus Sustainability. She has shared that our quest to engage the Greek Community is one that her office has attempted for more than ten years, and the only time they have gained traction has been when a project was initiated from within the Greek Community. When her office receives a request for support, they sit down with the individual to share resources and potential steps. She explained that it would be helpful to have a single guide designed especially for the Greek Community that shares specific things such as who owns the Greek properties, who manages the facilities, and who to reach out with the City and County for things such as recycling services. We have modified our project to include the creation of this resource.

We do plan to still offer two information sessions next week in partnership with staff from FSU Sustainable Campus. We have invited all Greek members to attend one of these sessions to earn one hour of service. At the session we will share videos and information to provide an overview about climate change, and we will share our ask, which is to create sustainability plans with action items such as recycling, mural, anything creative, making videos with us, and starting a social media dialogue within the FSU Greek Community and their national communities. We will support each Greek organization in creating an internal working committee dedicated to meeting the goals outlined within each plan. Members may document all hours spent on this project for community service.

We have begun to reach out to additional student groups such as athletic clubs, which also have community service mandates.
