PSA #1: Climate Change & The Growing Threat of Hurricanes
The Hitting Home Movement is off to a great start, with filming beginning last week. We shot our first PSA depicting the typical Floridian student response to a hurricane:
A hurricane party.
The narrative follows ambivalent young Floridians partying through what they believe to be a category 2 hurricane. The plot thickens when they are all of a sudden shocked to turn on the news and see the hurricane has turned into a category 5 faster than ever before -- a result of climate change causing warmer ocean temperatures and faster, more destructive storms. We will create a montage of news footage from past hurricanes’ unpredictable tracks, development, and damage to show this escalation. Think Project X turned The Day After Tomorrow cut down into a minute.
Similarly to Tobacco Free Florida PSAs, the scene will follow up with short facts on the screen explaining why this will happen, and a call to action to follow our movement on social media for tips on reducing your carbon footprint, improving sustainability efforts. The caption of this video will have detailed scientific explanations of why climate change will create devastating hurricanes. Editing has started over the weekend.
Additionally, we have created our social media accounts and a campaign logo to incorporate into all content.
For our second video, members went to the Tallahassee Farmers Market and identified Turkey Hill Farm that was willing to participate in an on-camera interview on property discussing how climate change affects their local business. We will be filming this in the coming weeks, tentatively March 29-31, once scheduling is solidified.
